What next? Fears of a new graduate!

June 8, 2017

Hello all

I am finally starting to come down from the excitement of Saturday's graduation ceremony. It was such an amazing event. SCAD really knows how to send their students out with a bang. I laughed, I cried, I was inspired. SCAD has been such a HUGE part of my life for the last 2.5 years. I have meet so many talented and inspiring people. People who have helped me to discover and believe in my inner artist. I will be forever grateful to them. Now … it’s time for “what comes next”. The dreaded job search!

It has been some time since I have had to look for a job with such intensity. The process is a bit intimidating and sometimes downright scary. There is so much competition. We live in a digital world where everything is online. Employers now sift through thousands of online applications only to grant the coveted interview to a few lucky individuals. I know for me it is a frustrating process. How do we compete? How do we make yourself standout?

We build our portfolios and try to compress our talents into 60 secs or less. We then send these demos out to employers and pray that they can grasp our potentials as designers in the first few seconds. Then we anxiously sit and wait for that call. You know … the one that says “I really like your work. Can you come in for an interview?”. I don’t know about you but this is the worst part for me, the waiting. The longer the wait, the more doubt starts to set in.

John Malkovich, our commencement speaker, stated that as creative beings we will always go through those moments when we ask ourselves “do I belong?” or “do I have what it takes to rise to the top?”. I am beginning to realize that self-doubt is part of the process. As artist, we are so close to our work we tend to only focus on the flaws, the things we wish we had time to change.

As new graduates, we cannot let this fear get the better of us. The trick is to never give up. We are SCAD graduates and we are now part of the creative elite. SCAD has given us everything we need to make it. We just need to believe in our talents, in our ability to see and think outside of the box. We are creative problem solvers and we are in demand. We must keep pushing forward, building upon and perfecting our skills. Each day we need to do something creative. Find a community of like-minded individuals where we can feed and learn from each other. If we do this that self-doubt won’t have time to set in. And that way when we get that call we are ready.

Best of luck to all the new graduates who have already found work and are living their passions. For the rest of us … keep your head up and keep grinding. Our opportunity is just around the corner. So, STAY ready, so we don’t have to GET ready.
